This is one of the first songs I wrote, and still one of my favorites.
After All
Words and music © 1978 J. Ochshorn (additional verse and bridge added in 2003)
1. You've always been good at hiding the truth from yourself
You made it into an art
You've never been good at fooling anyone else
It's easy to see your broken heart
[chorus] After all we've been through
You still act like you knew it all along
You can't admit that you might have been wrong
After all we've been through
You're still telling me the same old lies
It doesn't look like you got wise after all
2. Yyou wanna know why i'm leaving town tonight
Maybe you'll try to recall
I never was the kind to turn and run from a fight
But I feel like I'm talking to a wall [chorus]
[bridge] After all the time we've spent talking about it
Trying to find a word an act a single fact upon which to agree
But the play is over now the scene's complete
Let's cut our losses admit defeat and set each other free
3. You're telling me now it's just the way you planned
You say it with such conviction
You never seemed to have the need to understand
The difference between fact and fiction [chorus]
